THE FLASHES

The Thirtieth Flash

O wasteful and extravagant human being!

Know how greatly you act contrary to the truth by failing to practise frugality, one of the most fundamental principles governing the entire universe. And understand how fundamental and far-reaching is the principle taught by the verse:

كُلُوا وَاشْرَبوُا وَلاَ تُسْرِفُوا

The Second Matter

It may be said with self-evident certainty that the Names al-Hakam and al-Hakīm point to and necessitate the prophethood of the Noble Messenger (saw).

For just as a profoundly meaningful book requires a teacher to explain it, a perfect beauty calls for a mirror in which to behold and display itself, and a perfect work of art requires someone to exhibit and proclaim it, so too must there be, among humankind—the addressee of this great book of the universe, in which every letter contains hundreds of meanings and instances of wisdom—a most perfect guide and a supreme teacher.

Such a guide would teach the sacred and true wisdoms contained in this book; indeed, he would make known the very existence of the wisdoms manifest throughout the universe. Moreover, he would serve as a means by which the Divine purposes of creation are revealed and brought to fulfilment. And he would proclaim and reflect the perfection of the Divine artistry and the beauty of the Divine Names, which the Creator wills with such great care to display throughout the universe.

And since that Creator wills to make Himself loved through all His creatures and calls for a response from His conscious creatures, there must be someone who, on behalf of all conscious beings, responds to those vast manifestations of rububiyya with comprehensive worship.

Such a person would fill land and sea with spiritual ecstasy and cause the heavens and the earth to resound with a mighty proclamation and glorification, turning the attention of all conscious beings towards the Maker of these works of art. Through a Qur’an of supreme glory, whose sacred teachings and guidance draw the attention of all those endowed with reason, he would reveal in the most beautiful manner the Divine purposes of that Sāni-i Hakam-i Hakīm and offer the most perfect response to the manifestation of all His wisdoms and to the manifestations of His beauty and majesty.

The existence of such a person is as necessary and indispensable to this universe as the existence of the sun itself.
